Q & A  from the LA Archdiocese

Father of Light, Life, and Love
We praise and thank you for gathering a people from every race, land, and language to be the Body of Christ in our own time and place.

Washed in the waters of baptism, summoned and sent by your Word, strengthened and renewed by the Eucharist, we share in Christ's mission, becoming a living sign of reconciliation and peace.

We are called to prepare for the coming of your kingdom, responding to the changing needs of the people in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles,
building a world of communion and justice.

By your Spirit enlighten, enliven, and guide us as we journey together through the Synod to the fullness of life in Christ. In the gift of the Spirit, be with us and grant us, we pray:

Firm faith, to walk in the light of Christ; Abundant hope, to move forward in the face of every obstacle;

Love's flourishing, so that we might share in the divine life - even now.

Amen.

You have that opportunity, that invitation, right NOW, by getting involved in the Archdiocesan Synod preparations. Carrying out the mission of Jesus and the Spirit in our society and in our Church is a challenge that is both daily and dramatic. We are all swept up in the realities of an ever changing society which affect how we live and act as Church.

Los Angeles is the largest archdiocese in the United States and it is still growing and changing. Our archdiocesan family is made up of many cultures. We are united through Baptism and creed but we are very diverse in cultural values, language, and experience. All need to find a home in the Church. All need to be formed by the Word of God and nourished by the liturgy. All need to receive and to share in the ministry of the Church.

Recognizing that this is the time to address anew out needs and the pastoral concerns, Cardinal Mahony has called a Synod in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. A Synod gathers Clergy, religious and laity together in discernment processes in order to assist their chief pastor with spiritual revitalization and pastoral planning. Steps in the process are: prayer, dialogue, discernment, and decision.

The Archdiocesan Synod will provide us with the opportunity to implement the spirit and teaching of Vatican II by addressing our pastoral concerns together. The Synod process is not about problem solving, but about discernment leading to life-giving decisions for the future of the entire Archdiocese.

You are invited to participate through your parish Speak Up Sessions or through other Speak Up opportunities in fall 2001. In spring 2002, you will be asked again to contribute your input to the Synod in a 2nd Consultation process.

During the 2nd year of preparation Regional Synod Assemblies will be held. These assemblies will be made up of representatives from throughout the Region who will: 1) discuss the input, 2) formulate proposals for the Synod to consider, and 3) select delegates to the Archdiocesan Synod.

At the conclusion of the process, Cardinal Mahony will sign Synod documents. These will express the vision and the legislation designed to direct spiritual revitalization and pastoral planning for years to come.

The schedule of the LISTENING SESSIONS are:
          Wednesday, October 17th, 7:00 to 9:00 PM
          Sunday, October 21st, 2:00 to 4:00 PM
